For the past three years I have had the amazing opportunity to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's birthday with a group of young writers, at an event called Bringing the Noise. This event is put on by an organization called Youth Speaks. It showcases young people from all over the Bay Area who have written inspirational poems, stories and songs that embody the demand for justice that Dr. King so passionately fought for. It is one of my favorite events and I look forward to it with each new year.

The article claims that nearly 53% of women do not have a retirement plan. Guess what? I am one of those 53%.

I only just started saving for retirement within the last three years. I just started investing in May. Of course, as soon as I put my money in the market, everything started to go belly up and now I have less than I started with. According to the article, 29% of the women who are planning for retirement prefer to do their own research. I too thought that I could figure it all out, but based on my record so far, I've decided to see a Financial Planner. One that specializes in Socially Responsible Investing.
Sandra P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06813336311223562603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1964952762362831276.post-84762497645685805522012-01-11T21:58:00.000-08:002012-01-13T23:05:50.525-08:00Writing a Blog

Ok, so here we are almost 12 days into 2012 and it is fairly obvious that I didn't live up to at least one of my goals! I've never been very good at keeping a journal. Why do I expect myself to be any better at maintaining a blog? I think about posting something on it everyday. It is something I really want to do, though I can't seem to find the time to make it a priority. I have so many different ideas for posts and ideas are swimming around my head all day long for weekly segments. I even signed up for a blogging class, but have yet to open up my binder. How do I make something that I really want to do a priority when there are so many things I have to do?

I am going to Costa Rica in a few days for a wedding, which means the pressure is on to be bikini ready AGAIN! I spent all last spring exercising and eating well so that I would look "amazing" on my wedding day and for my honeymoon. I actually managed to loose 15 pounds! Then I don't know what happened, I started getting lazy and before I knew it I was right back where I started. I seriously can't believe how fast it all came back.

So, in addition to my end of the year goals, one of which is to exercise at least 4 times per week, I've decided to make "stay in shape" one of my 2012 goals. BUT, the thing about goals is that (for me) they have to be a little bit more specific. "Get in shape for your wedding day" was perfect. I had a reason to get up and exercise everyday.

So now I've come up with another reason. I am going to do a Sprint Triathlon, which is much shorter and easier than an Olympic triathlon. There are quite a few of them in Northern CA, many of which make you swim in the ocean or the Bay. I'm a little nervous about the cold water and competing against other people. But hey, I won't know what its like until I try right?
Sandra P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06813336311223562603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1964952762362831276.post-43371830824563312572011-10-20T23:07:00.000-07:002012-01-14T20:03:18.169-08:00End of the Year Goals

Now that I have decided to get back into blogging, I have teamed up with Danni at oh, hello friend and a few other bloggers to create a list of personal goals that we want to complete by January 1, 2012.

I think that between this list and my blogging class, I should have enough content to gain some real headway into this blogging world.

So here we go...

1. Update blog at least once a week

2. Take at least 50 pictures that I think are blog worthy and post them to my flickr accout

3. Finish my blogging class

4. Exercise at least 4 times a week

5. Order and install new blinds for my office

6. Get a B in my extremely hard accounting class

7. Change my name to Sandra J. Valente

8. Finish the thank you notes for the wedding gifts that we received

9. Order our wedding pictures and start working on our album

10. Pay off my credit card

11. Buy a fashionable winter coat

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
12. Finish at least two of the books that I am currently reading

Wow its been over a year since I've posted to this blog and boy, so many blog worthy (for me) things have happened in my life. I got engaged, took a couple of great classes, planned a whole wedding, got married, and went on an amazing honeymoon! There was just so much going on that I couldn't bring myself sit down and capture it all in the blog - I've never been good at keeping a journal. So, I just kept on going, all the while thinking about what I wanted to do with this blog and the things that I wanted to share at a later date.

A nap is not a nap without light. This is what distinguishes it from a good night's sleep. A nap is a stolen moment, not the natural culmination of the day. A nap is secret, illicit. It is sleeping during the day, and the day must be present and visible. There must be light - ideally dappled in a garden or slanted through a window; soft and filtered and gentle.
But the reality is, we need to pay down his car before we can actually do that. While we will probably be holding out for a while longer, I learned an interesting tidbit today about new car buying that I would like to share...

As we all know a brand new car looses value as soon as you drive it off the lot, but I just learned it can be as much as 20% or more- wow! According to Edmunds.com, a car retains the most value between years 2 and 4. By year five the average car has about 60,000 miles on it and that's when we usually have to start putting money into it for big service items like a new timing belt or water pump or new tires.

Another interesting fact is that the average person only owns a car for about three years. So (for you average folks) if you sell your car between year 4 and 5 you may get most of what you paid for it back and avoid having to pay for all of service costs. Now, the moral of this lesson...if you are in the market for a new car, the best bet for your money is to actually look for a two year old car with low mileage. Additionally, look for one with good gas mileage and lower emissions so that you are also doing your part for the environment.

While buying this beauty pretty much goes against everything I just said, I would still love to have one...

Ford Truck

Sandra P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06813336311223562603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1964952762362831276.post-1056274733946129612010-07-12T10:30:00.000-07:002012-01-14T20:04:51.282-08:00Summer Food

Since my class has kept me home for the majority of the summer, my extracurricular activities have become much simpler. I guess you could say I've become very domestic over the past 6 weeks and have been putting a lot of thought into food. I read a wonderful book called Farm City, by Novella Carpenter and just started Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Last weekend I baked a cheesecake, next weekend I am going to bake my first pie, and this weekend it's all about pickling!

We started our pickling escapade with a trip to the farmers market at the San Francisco Ferry Building. This is probably the best farmers market in the city, and since everyone knows it, it's pretty crowded. The selection is amazing! Unfortunately we forgot to bring the camera, so I've scoured flicker for some beautiful shots of the veggies we chose.

This is a great way to keep all of the pictures of cool stuff that you find on the internet in one place. You simply pin the pictures onto the boards in your Pinterest account. Then you can go back to them whenever you want. What's even more cool is that if you wan to repost the picture, the original site that that you pulled the picture from stay's with it, so that you can credit the original poster! On Wednesday I will be posting pictures from my What Home Means to Me board.
Sandra P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06813336311223562603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1964952762362831276.post-28083989539525697672010-06-27T11:32:00.001-07:002012-01-14T20:26:03.955-08:00San Francisco Fog

Sfgirlbybay is one of my favorite blogs and Victoria, the blogging queen that she is, has put together another blog-it-forward type of project called "What Home Means To Me." I am proud to be participating in this along with 300 other bloggers. My day is coming up here real soon on the 30th, but what I have noticed most about looking at so many other amazing blogs is how many people - including myself - call San Francisco home. It is such an amazing city but the summers here are just crazy! We really never know what kind of weather each day is going to bring. It could be sunny and warm or cold and foggy. I have been blessed to live in a place with an amazing view and it's sunny where I am right now, but I am literally watching the blanket of fog roll over the park headed in my direction.
Unfortunately I didn't ride my bike to work today, but I did on Tuesday! I work in the city on Tuesday's and Friday's so I ride to work as often as I can as long as its not raining. The ride to work is pretty much all downhill which is great, but also means that the ride home is uphill. I've been riding my bike to and from work for almost a year now and I still can't quite make it all the way home without having to walk my bike up my steep street. My bike is an old Nishiki - probably from the 80's, that Chris got me for Christmas. He bought it off of eBay and put cruiser style handlebars and a new seat on it. The only problem is the steel frame weighs about 30 pounds and it only has a few gears that actually work for my commute.
Last night I saw Thom Yorke's band Atoms For Peace and was blown away by how good it was. His album The Eraser is amazing, in fact it's what actually got me into Radiohead, rather than the other way around. Flea and Thom [Yorke] were so fun to watch dancing around the stage together. Below is the video for the song Atoms for Peace.
This is some wonderful footage of San Francisco in 1906, just four days before the Earthquake. It was taken with a camera mounted to a cable car. I love it for so many reasons. The few women that you do see are wearing long dresses and big feathered hats. There are absolutely no traffic lights, so cars, people and horse drawn wagons are scurrying all over the place while the cable car just moves along down Market Street towards the Ferry Building.

I love black and white photography and old movie footage. I started collecting black and white postcards when I was in high school. Every time I would go to the mall I would pop into Z Gallerie (when it used to be mostly an art store) and buy a funky black and white picture. It wasn't long before I had enough to make a border all the way around my room just below my ceiling. I have all but one stashed away in a box. The one that is out on my fridge is a picture of about 100 pieces of toast all lined up on one table with about 20 toasters lined up on another table. A great reminder of how perfect and simple a slice of toast is.
Sandra P.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06813336311223562603noreply@blogger.com0
